Edmundo was not born to the palace, but he chose it, the way a stray dog chooses a good porch and refuses to leave, and for years that loyalty nearly bought him the shogun's chair. The night before his ascension he climbed the palace roof to meditate under the moon like the old scrolls demanded, except somewhere between the second sake and the dare he took a bet that he could down an entire bowl of wasabi like it was nothing, degen instinct overriding centuries of discipline in one green, catastrophic bite. He wept, he swore, he rolled off the tiles clutching his throat while the succession council watched in horror, and by morning the title had quietly rugged him for someone less theatrical. Now he stands watch at the gate instead of the throne, foreign eyes sharp, blade ready, dry laugh always half a second from breaking through the stoic mask. He regrets nothing, he insists, though he still keeps wasabi far off the floor of any table he's aped up to.
Decorative. Traditional. The Tassel fighters know that ornament and function are not opposites — presentation is part of performance.
Military patience. The Olive Green fighters do not announce themselves. They wait. Then they move.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
The standard-bearer. The Proud Dejen Kimono fighters represent the collection consciously — they know what they're part of and they dress accordingly.
An old foreign word for wealth and protection stitched together. He guards something, though what changes depending on who's asking and how much they've had to drink.
Fox face. The Kitsune Mask fighters wear the shapeshifter's face — which means every identity is available to them and none is fixed.
Named for what grew. The Wise Greatness fighters became something across time that couldn't be rushed and didn't try to be.
The poisonous pufferfish as a weapon. The Frightened Fugu fighters chose something lethal that looks absurd — and find that this is the most accurate description of themselves.
